Review: A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang

Title:  A Brush of Darkness
Author:  Allison Pang
Pages:  343
Genre:  Urban Fantasy/Paranormal
Publisher:  Pocket Books (A Simon & Schuster Division)
Summary:  The man of her dreams might be the cause of her nightmare. Six months ago, Abby Sinclair was struggling the pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Now, she has an enchanted iPod, a miniature unicorn living in her underwear drawer, and a magical marketplace to manage. But despite her growing knowledge of the OtherWorld, Abby isn't at all prepared for Brystion, the dark, mysterious, and sexy-as-sin incubus searching for his sister, convinced Abby has the key to the succubus's whereabouts. Abby has enough problems without having this seductive shape-shifter literally invade her dreams to get information. But when her Faery boss and some of her friends vanish, as well, Abby and Brystion must form an uneasy alliance. As she is sucked deeper and deeper into this perilous world of faeries, angels, and daemons, Abby realizes her life is in as much danger as her heart--and there's only one she can trust to save her.

The Dish:  When it comes to selecting books (and series) to read, oftentimes it's all in the taglines and what quotes really stand out that will draw readers.  For me, I have to say it was after reading a quote from the author's website that almost made me spit water onto my monitor that I knew I had to read Allison Pang's A Brush of Darkness.

I'm beginning to realize just how picky I can be when it comes to series, particularly urban fantasy or paranormal series.  It's no fault of the authors because they're definitely doing their jobs of delivering great books, but I hadn't really felt the need to invest time into an UF series... until now.  Abby Sinclair is adorable, quirky, unsure, fallible, all traits I really adore in a herione because they show that she is indeed human.  I enjoy reading about confident, kick-butt, lets-get-er-done main characters, too, but finding one at the beginning of her journey and needing to learn more about herself is just as enjoyable.  Granted, sometimes that means being tossed into the water without a paddle, and Abby is definitely swimming with the sharks throughout the story.

After going through a great deal of tragedy within the past six months, I can relate to how Abby feels within this strange world that she's only recently learned about.  And believe me, there is a lot to take in knowing there are forces of the supernatural living alongside our own human realm.  Seeing it through the eyes of someone new helps to move the story along quite nicely because as Abby learns more about these celestial, faerie, and daemonic beings so does the reader.  When her own faerie boss disappears, it's no wonder Abby's not quite sure what to do in the situation, so she just tries to roll (or duck) with the punches.  I will admit, she does take some risks that surprised me and made me shake my head at her inexperience, but fortunately, she does have those willing to help her.

What amazes me most is how Pang has been able to bring together so many different supernatural creatures in such a smooth manner.  With some books that try to take on too many supernaturals, the story might be full of exposition just to clarify the existence of all of these otherworldly beings, not to mention readers might not really get to know the important characters because there are so many.  I loved how Pang picked out certain supernaturals to introduce, expand upon, and show that they are more than powerful non-humans while at the same time introducing others without necessarily going into great detail about backgrounds.

Brystion is definitely a favorite character, and who can blame me since he is a sexy-as-sin incubus?  (And between you and me, readers, I think incubi are slowly becoming the new supernatural, the one to see in future titles.)  Even with learning as much as possible about him, Brystion still has that air of mystery about him as well as the dark, brooding persona.  I wanted to slug him a few times in the story, yet he still somehow managed to have me warming back up to him.

It makes me happy when an author can really end a book on a satisfying note without necessarily closing the book completely.  Namely, I was satisfied with the ending but I definitely want to read more because I know this is only the beginning.  When a first book in a series leaves the reader with that sort of feeling, you know you've found one you want to stick with.  And I aim to stay on track with Abby's story.  Lucky me, A Sliver of Shadow is due to be released come the end of February.

Top Ten Books I'm Excited to Read in 2012
(In no particular order)

1. Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey
Dragons have been decidedly absent in YA literature (or at least in the books I've read), so I'm really looking forward to this great new release.

2. Everneath by Brodi Ashton
This is sure to be an interesting take on the Underworld, so I'm excited about it's release this month (and even more excited about the book tour in February!)

3. Fated by Alyson Noel
This one sounds so fascinating and spooky.

4. A Sliver of Shadow by Allison Pang
I was thrilled with Abby Sinclair's introduction in A Brush of Darkness, and I'm definitely looking forward to continuing her story in the second book.

5. Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier
Once again I'm subbing the Italian version that I find ever so lovely.  This one is coming out so late, but I'm still so thrilled about it's release!

6. Incarnate by Jodi Meadows
I've heard such great things about this one, I just can't wait to read it.  And just look at the beautiful cover!

7. Taken by Storm by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Although I haven't read Trial by Fire yet, I just know it's going to be a great read and therefore this one shall be great as well.

8. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
The main character sounds like such a strong female lead, so it's any wonder I'm looking forward to this book's release.

9. Underworld by Meg Cabot
Abandon was a great introduction, and I'm sure there will be more answers to questions left unanswered at the end in the next title.

10. Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
It is the year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac, so it won't surprise me if we see even more dragon-featured books.  This cover is just so mysterious and mystical, containing an awesome story.

Top Ten Tuesday (27): Top Ten Books I Want To Give As Gifts

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week a new Top Ten list will be posted by one of the bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish. Everyone is welcome to join, just make sure to link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so everyone can check out other blogger lists. Top Ten Books I Want to Give As Gifts
(In no particular order)

1. Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
I want to give this book to all of my blogging friends. It sounded like a great story, so I bought it on a whim at the Austin Teen Book Festival. It ended up being one of my absolute favorite reads for this year. Highly recommended especially for this time of year!

2. Wolfsbane and Mistletoe edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner
This one would be for Carmel of Rabid Reads and any other lycanthrope "lunatics" out there. It's Christmas stories involving werewolves, what more could you ask for?

3. Rival by Sara Bennett Wealer
I'd definitely give this one to Beth, my best friend from high school. The story just reminded me of her and I so much, though fortunately we weren't to the awful extent of Kathryn and Brooke. I think she'd read it for the nostalgia factor.

4. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
For Elizabeth, an old friend from high school, who just so happens to have a pink taser. I told her in FB she needed to check out this book after she mentioned owning a pink taser.

5. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder.
I'm looking right at you, Marla. Since Marla of Starting the Next Chapter has read and reviewed Touch of Power, I think the next step is getting her a copy of Poison Study, Maria's first book.

6. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
I can't help but think of Andy, my friend in the UK, when I see this book time and again. I would gladly get it for him for Christmas.

7. A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang
This title definitely screams Nova, one of my friends from San Antonio with a passion for...well, passionate books. And since I'm really enjoying it, I know it's right up her alley.

8. Ada: Legend of a Healer by R.A. McDonald
With Ada being such a kick-butt kind of character, I can't help but want to get a copy for Beth (same best friend from high school). Since she enjoys those kinds of characters (wonder where she gets it from), I think Ada would be just right for her.

9. Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey
After having the chance to meet this amazing and funny author, I would give this one to myself first off (hey, I don't have a copy yet) and any one of my readers. Texas authors come from a big state, so they need big reader love!

10. The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Anyone who loves horses or Irish mythology because this is one courageous story about a dangerous horse race.
Plus check out the awesome paperback cover art! Just gorgeous!

There are definitely more books to give as gifts, but the amount of titles would fill a library. (And probably has already.)

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books on My TBR List for Winter

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, a state that you don't have to worry about being deprived of more books as long as you're near a library.  This week's Top Ten is:

Top Ten Books on My TBR List for Winter
(In no particular order)

I'd been wanting to read this one for awhile, and with the coming of the cooler weather, it's time to do so at long last!

2. Nocturne by Syrie James
Same applies to this one as with my first book, and don't you just love that cover? So wintry white with a rose and blood on the snow that just stands out in stark contrast!

3. Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
I think it's about time to finally read my boarding school book that I've had since...spring?

4. A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang
This one will probably be first since it's In Transit to my library branch. And after the awesome power of The Scorpio Races, I'll need something like this for adult lit.

5. Awake at Dawn by C.C. Hunter
After Born at Midnight, I was really excited about this one being released this year, too. I wonder how Hunter will depict Texas winters...or if it takes place close to winter.

6. Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore
Showing more love for my Texas-born authors, especially with the book that takes place in my parents' current home area, the hill country!

7. Lost on Brier Island by JoAnn Yhard
You've got to have a seascape book to escape the "winter doldrums."

8. Ties to the Blood Moon by Robin P. Waldrop
A book based in Alaska during winter...yes, I will definitely need the blanket while reading this title, and looking forward to it, too!

9. The Avalon Chronicles: Volume 1 by Nunzio DeFilippis
I had to sneak in a graphic novel somewhere!

10. Friendship Bread by Darien Gee
And how can you have a winter list of books without a baking book in there?  Bet you were expecting an actual baking cookbook, weren't you?  Well, there will be plenty of those, but you're not really reading them so much as following the recipes...or looking through the photos (like me).
